Safe standing could be introduced to Premier League in 2020/21 season
The introduction of safe standing to English football could come into force for the 2020/21 season. An independent review of the existing rules is being carried out to assess the positives and negatives of safe standing, with the Premier League, the EFL and the FA agreeing that it should be permitted if agreed by local authorities.Scottish champions Celtic have installed a safe standing area at their Parkhead home1

Standing was banned in the top two divisions in 1989 in the aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster. However, despite the review being announced by the government in the summer, the full report will not be available before the new year. This, according to The Times, is likely to delay any change in the rules until the start of the 2020/21 season.Tottenham have prepared for the potential eventuality of safe standing being introduced by future-proofing their new stadium, which is expected to open next year. Earlier this week it was confirmed that League One club Wycombe have become the first English team to install safe standing, with 68 ‘2020 seats’ fitted in the Family Stand at Adams Park. The seats allow fans to either sit or stand without blocking the view of others, though Wycombe do not yet have permission to use the seats during a match.
